We just nipped over to Paris for a couple of days to check some shows - Pompidou - 'Danse' and Josef Albers. 'Danse' linked the visual arts with dance as inter exchanging disciplines which have and continue to inform and inspire each other. Also the redecorated Le Corbusier Maison Roche, Pont De Sevres Ceramic Museum and the Cartier Foundation where Lynch's new 'Works on Paper' was on display alongside other collaborative elements for the museum.

Ok this is a secret so don;t tell anyone. The Archipelago Islands off the coast of Stockholm are beautiful. It was good to get out of the studio for the weekend during these hectic days and refresh the senses. Island rocks crushed, moulded and smoothed under 3km of ice during the iceage which apparently are still rising by 4mm each year due to the pressure they were under.

It was a busy Summer and we re well into Autumn now. Latitude Festival took place place back in July - NCC collaborated with Holly on some animated pieces Produced by Fallon Films which were projected in water at night around the camp. Not just projected in the water but into and through water which was sprayed from the lake to form a temporary projection screen. Here's an edit of all the work produced by various directors:

Hepworth's Space and Form

Whilst we were in St Ives at the weekend it was great to see the home and studio of Barbara Hepworth. The actual studio spaces of which built alongside her garden were alot smaller than I had imagined considering both the size and complexity of some of the larger pieces often seen in context with her commissioned works. Also being able to view at first hand the sculpting tools and small maquette's together with further unfinished works built over time, space and form.

Kazakhstan Mobile Cities

During the 33 hr train journey's we took across Kazakhstan as part of the Unknown Fields Mission in July stopping at stations became a race to gather food and drink supplies as the buffet car had a limited menu. The following mobile DIY stalls/ units were documented serving ice cold water and a magnitude of other savouries / snacks.

We get a call, Baikonur the Russian Space Centre built to service the space industry calls us that a un-maned satellite rocket launch will take place at 8 am the next day and did we want to see it. Jumping straight back onto the coach after the 33 hr train ride from Almaty overnight across the moon like surface of the Kazak desert to the Baikonur launch pad and witnessed the jet rocket named Spekta 2 launch. Initially you see the smoke blast from the rocket silently, this is quickly followed by a gigantic roar, all cackling soundwave streams washing over and past you whilst the rocket soared and curved away. The non believers were left jaw dropping.

Overnight flight delayed which meant by the time we arrived in Almaty at dawn we had missed our train connection - a 33 hr ride across the Kazakhstan desert to the Aral Sea. Plan get a cab to the next station and try and catch up the train. After waiting nervously for our bags at the airport which seemed to take forever we sped off in the cabs at full speed. Kazak roads are a death trap - narrowly avoiding a dead animal, x 2 over taking coaches and countless other near misses whilst our driver had to pump the air in the tyres and take a leak. Result: we missed the train and had to wait 8 hours for the next. The subsequent ride was smooth, the pace of the train just right letting the track noise slowly shake you into a deep slumber after some ice cold soda's in the buffet car.

Finally getting to the washed out planes of the Aral Sea, the sea now long gone after being continuously drained for the past 20 years to service the cotton fields. Dreams of a forgotten past now hang from the fishing boats on dry dock as we look out on what should been the harbour busy with boats and action.

Visiting the Chernobyl exclusion zone was a surreal experience. Bereft of people since the diaster in '86 yet still active with workers and security - The site being in lock down under state control and perhaps we will be the last public visitors for a while since the shut down to the public of the site last week. The Chernobyl tour took us around The Atomic City of Tomorrow: Pripyat and around the sarcophagus reactor 4 of the power plant. The invisibility of the radiation and apparent natural abundance of trees make the site seem safe, the danger of cause lies hidden under cracks and rooted within the topsoil for as long as humans will ever know. But alot was learnt and discussed by members of the Unknown Fields Division headed by Liam Young and Kate Davies of the Architectural Association in particular how the atomic city of tomorrow may relate to the past, present and future of our time. Looking back are we also looking forwards to future relics, myths and monuments.

Neasden Control Centre has been invited as Graphic Artist in Residence as part of the Architectural Association's annual field trip organised by Liam Young and Kate Davies from Unknown Field Division. Unknown Field Division is a nomadic studio that travels on annual expeditions to the ends of the earth exploring unreal and forgotten landscapes, alien terrains and obsolete ecologies - This year we will travel on a cross section through landscapes of obsolete futures from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, through the Ukraine and the oil fields of Azerbaijan to rocket launch pad of kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrone. Looking through Donlon Books and spotted a book of British Folk and Craft Industries. Charcoal Burning being one of these - as featured in the stunning Le Quattro Volte Film showing at present. The Furness area of the Lake District had been famous for its charcoal for hundreds of years; most of it was used to smelt iron and steel for use in industry throughout the world. Today 80 to 90 % of charcoal used in the UK is imported from the third world.
